A lot happening on the podcast today... News Product Review Deeper Sonar Pescadamy Awards Gross Bait Contest Update Patreon First up the News, you will hear lots of background noise in this because it was recorded in a coffee shop... so fun How about a product Review I was sent a Deeper Sonar www.deeper.com to test out and here is what it is and what I think. First a big thanks to deeper for sending it. Now a description Troll, map, scan and catch with the Deeper Smart Sonar PRO, then use it as an ice flasher in winter. This versatile, powerful fish finder scans down to 260 ft / 80 m, using its rock solid Wi-Fi connection to send detailed sonar data direct to your smartphone or tablet. Mark fish, locate structure and features, map out any water from your kayak or boat, and start fishing smarter with the Deeper PRO. SO Here is what you get, a cool looking black ball... and a few cables for charging... It charges up quickly and is ready to go. You will need to download the free deeper app for your smartphone. I was using it on an iPhone 6. Full disclosure. I got this in the beginning of the summer, but Rich Collins our Fly Fishing correspondent got one last winter, so I have used it before. Let’s talk about first impressions in open water. As soon as I linked it to my phone and tossed it in the water it started working. I was super impressed with how easy the screen was to read and I actually found it easier to use than the super expensive lowrance system I have on my pontoon boat. So that’s a total win. I was able to see structure, mark fish and easily figure out how to catch fish. So pretty great. I know a lot of guys who use these in their kayaks and love it. Last year on the ice was the first time I really used this.. And it has flasher setting so it’s great for vertical jigging. Works well and eliminates the need for a super expensive flasher. Not bad for something that retails for around $200 We caught a lot of fish using it. Now the downside... and this is not the fault of deeper. Iphones hate the cold. So you have a very limited window of fishing when it’s extremely cold out. Iphones just shut down. So use them on warmer days, inside your ice shack or have your phone plugged into external power while running this. Another trick you could try is sticking hand warmer packs to the back of your phone case. I have not tried this on an android device and would be interesting in hearing other’s feedback. Overall I like the deeper sonar and think it’s a cool gadget for the money especially great for kayak anglers and ice fishers. Fans are part of the show this week as the Nerds relay the results of the latest Facebook poll on the Fish Nerds Podcast group. Dave interviews Zombait co-founder Matthew Borowski to find out why we need a fishy robot to bring our dead bait back to life. Zombait is nearing the end of their kickstarter campaign and they need Nerd help. The Nerds end the show by promoting their upcoming appearance at the Rockingham Fishing and Hunting
