FN Podcast 134 The Business of Guiding, Tim Moore Outdoors, Twin Maple Outdoors & Hill Country Guides
Welcome to the Fish Nerds It’s a celebration of fish, fishing, and eating fish that is always interesting, usually funny, and mostly true. Nate Hill of Hill Country Guide Service www.whitemountainflyfishing.com I’m Clay, We talk about fish, fishing and eating fish! Anything is fair game and it’s a good bet, that waiting for winter will make me want to change hobbies to something else that’s boring to wait for, like watching food cook in a crock-pot or watching grass grow. This is the third part of our series of becoming a fishing guide, we are going to chat about the business side of guiding. This series is sponsored by NH outdoor learning center, http://www.nhoutdoorlearning.com/ This is where I went to guide school. There is no chance I would have passed NH’s guide exam without going to guide school. Scott Jackson will teach you everything you need to know to Pass NH’s rigorous oral boards, he also will make sure you are an expert outdoorsman. Nate, what do you think about the NH guide exam? I interviewed Tim Moore, from www.Timmooreoutdoors.com Richard Yvonne from www.twinmapleoutdoors.com and asked them how does one make a living at guiding. But since I have Nate right here with me, I am going to ask him that first, Nate, How do you make a living as a guide? What is your business model? I am still working on mine, my business is starting off part-time while I wait to generate some revenue and grow it. In an upcoming show I will tell you about the hidden expenses of running a guide service. This show is funded by YOU OUR listeners, and we need more support, so if you have a few extra bucks a month, like 4 bucks, head over to www.patreon.com/fishnerds and throw a dollar an episode into the hat. That money goes directly to paying to keep this show on the internet. We honestly cannot do this show without listener support. If you donate at the $5 a show level you will be sent a super warm fleece lined fish nerds beanie! Also a big fat thanks to our newest Patreon Supporters, Michael Steffen Akihito Dan Michael crooker Michael Frank Reed Sutter Clay So that is it. you have listen to a few of Fish Nerds when you could have been fishing,: Nate We’d like to thank our families for supporting us while we podcast, go on fishing Quests and do all sorts of silly things that nerds do. If you would like to support Fish Nerds you can go to Patreon.com and search for Fish Nerds and help us crowd fund this podcast! Clay: Special thanks to Tim Moore www.timmooreoutdoors.com Richard Yvonne www.twinmapleoutdoors.com and of course Nate Hill http://www.whitemountainflyfishing.com/ Nate:: And until next time, follow the code of the Fish Nerd: Spawn early and often; Clay: Avoid free lunches with strings attached; Nate: swim against the current every chance you get.

Fish Nerds Podcast 133 Center Pin Fishing with Daina, Ice Skating on Dead Fish and the FN West
.Today’s show is supported by the Fish Nerds Guide Service, the only Ice Fishing Service serving the Mount Washington Valley, if you want to fish with ME Clay Groves, head to www.fishnerds.com to book your trip, we specialize in family friendly ice fishing adventures. And coming in February, Romance/Bromance night fishing for lovers. We will hunt the most romantic of NH’s native fish. So in today’s show we are going to talk Center-Pin Fishing, I’ve never heard of it either! As you may know we have a facebook group “The Fish Nerds Podcast” and Daina Snyder and her husband Jeffery Syder have been sharing fantastic photos and videos of the fish they have been catching in the Niagra River, this sparked conversations about fish and of course their technique. I should also say that we needed a female angler on the show because we got called out on another podcast for being a show for guys. The She Podcasts, podcast can be found anywhere podcasts are found, Elsie Escobar and Jessica Kupferman do a fun show but mentioned and talked about the Fish Nerds recently and said women do not fish. I want to show them they are FN wrong. We love them anyway. But before I get to her, I chatted with Nate Hill from Hill country guide service about center pin fishing. http://www.whitemountainflyfishing.com/ So I called Dana and asked her about her fishing, she was actually fishing the niagra river when I called.. That’s the background noise you will hear in this interview. Head to www.fishnerds.com to see the photos of her fish. Fish in the News I asked Nate to hang with me for the news News this week was submitted to us by our fans on the fish nerds podcast group on Facebook http://wyomingpublicmedia.org/post/wyoming-game-and-fish-try-new-technology-control-invasive-burbot www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-38127428 Fish Guy Josh and the Amazing James tossed us a little news too! http://www.grindtv.com/fishing/vietnam-veterans-dying-wish-catch-one-last-fish-video/#8zC7g3JLMMYZdjRW.97

Fish Nerds Podcast 132 Becoming a Guide Part 2 Guiding Mistakes
Welcome to the Fish Nerds, it’s a celebration of Fish Fishing and Eating fish I’m Clay Groves, Licensed NH Fishing Guide Today’s episode is sponsored by the NH Outdoor Learning Center http://www.nhoutdoorlearning.com/ this is where I went to gudie school. Scott Jackson runs a great program that will teach you everything you need to know to pass the NH Guide Test... I doubt I could have passed the test without taking the course. This is the second part in our series on becoming a fishing guide. As I was traveling around meeting guides, I was struck by how competent and confident they all are. The only way to gain that level of confidence is by making mistakes. So I begged the question, what do you consider a bad day with clients. I’ve collected three stories or you, FIrst Up, we have Tim Moore, Tim Moore is a licensed NH guide and one of the hardest working guys I know. For more information on Tim head to www.timmooreoutdoors.com I caught up with Tim at a coffee shop in Portsmouth NH Next up, Captain Shawn Tibbetts, Captain shawn runs a tune/shark charter out of Saco MAine. Shawn has taught me a ton about fishing for sharks, cussing like a sailor and kissing other guys... I don’t want to talk about that! You can find the good captain at www.mainetunafishing.com We recorded this segment on top of a Mountain in North Conway NH Twin Maple Outdoors.com Richard Yvone owner of Twin Maple Outdoors checked in with his guide disaster story. After hearing this I would definitely trust Richard to guide me in the wilds of Maine.. If you are in the Highlands of ME you should hire Richard, you can even book his lodge! https://twinmapleoutdoors.com/ I managed to get him out of the woods and on the phone. FISH IN THE NEWS I love Fish IN the News http://www.startribune.com/hudson-wis-entrepreneur-makes-slick-pitch-on-shark-tank/402770536/ Hudson, Wis., entrepreneur wows 'Shark Tank' Vance Zahorski, an avid fisherman, nets $120,000 investment on show. He entered the infamous “Shark Tank” seeking a $120,000 return for 20 percent of his company, but gave up 33 percent to seal the deal. While other Sharks showed interest in the company, Daymond John, the multimillionaire behind FUBU, was the only one to make a formal offer after seeing the device, marketed as the “ultimate fishing essential” on the company’s website. The exposure is a huge victory for the start-up that Zahorski founded on a whim in 2013. He quit his six-figure salary sales job at an appliance company in Arizona, sold his prized fishing boat and the dream home he helped build with his bare hands, then moved back to his hometown in western Wisconsin with his wife and two young daughters. A prototype made of welding putty and a dental floss cutter would explode into a booming business. Less than two years after launching, the rings now sell in hundreds of independent bait and tackle shops in eight different countries. When Zahorski realized the rings also cut thread and yarn, the products were stocked in quilting stores. It retails for $12. There will be even more to be thankful for this year. I caught up with Vance over skype after the show aired... Captain Shawn Tibbetts is back with his segment Vets in the News, the Fish Nerds want to pay tribute to vets who have protected our free speech and allowed us to grow into this Fish Nerd Media Empire. So that is it. you have listen to a few of Fish Nerds when you could have been fishing, We’d like to thank our families for supporting us while we podcast, go on fishing Quests and do all sorts of silly things that nerds do. If you would like to support Fish Nerds you can go to Patreon.com and search for Fish Nerds and help us crowd fund this podcast! Special thanks to Tim Moore www.timmooreoutdoors.com Captain Shawn Tibbetts www.mainetunafishing.com Richard Yvonee, www.twinmapleoutdoors.com Vance Zahorski from Line Cutterz.com : And until next time, follow the code of the Fish Nerd: Spawn early and often; Avoid free lunches with strings attached; swim against the current every chance you get. If you want to book me to guide you on the ice this winter, head to www.fishnerds.com In a couple of weeks we will release the next part of the guide series, the Business of guiding

The Fish Call: Is Calling Fish The Next Big Thing?
A proposed product called "The Fish Call" is taking Kickstarter by storm. As of the time of this recording, father and son team Jeff and Jack Danos are 664% funded, with $66,471pledged - and they still have 18 days to go! We caught up with the 16 year-old Jack and asked him some questions our fans had about their new product. What kind of fish does it attract? What is the science behind its development? Jack was great at answering the questions and he was a good sport dealing with the Nerds as we had fun pitching new sound ideas and joking about going to his homeschool prom. We hope this young entrepreneur can turn "The Fish Call" into the next Duck Dynasty (Fish Nerd Fan Jeff Dannaldson suggested Redfish Regime).
